Desferrioxamine Therapy is given to patients who have Beta Thalassaemia. These patients require regular blood transfusions and as a result have elevated Ferritin levels.
The purpose of Desferrioxamine is as an iron chelator (the iron binds with the blood and is then excreted through the bowel). Desferrioxamine is given either intravenously with blood transfusions or, for patients with extremely high Ferritin levels, it is given by intermittent infusions.
