Healthcare at Home has been working in the field of Lysosomal Storage Disorders since 1998. Then, Genzyme Therapeutics chose Healthcare at Home to provide a comprehensive home support service for patients suffering from Gauchers Disease and who are prescribed Cerezyme. A fully audited cold-chain supply of Cerezyme to the patient's home and the provision of a dedicated fridge and thermometer ensure that this very expensive drug is not compromised. The highly skilled nursing team trains and encourages patients or carers to self-administer Cerezyme by IV infusion in their own homes, thus enabling an appropriate level of autonomy for individuals. The 24/7 nursing on-call service ensures that patients can always access advice from a known and trusted source. This service has been provided free of charge to all NHS units.
Healthcare at Home has established a good working relationship with the 4 Gaucher Referral Centres (Addenbrooke's, Royal Free, Great Ormond Street and Manchester Children's Hospital) and the Gaucher Association (www.gaucher.org.uk) who have all contributed to the development of the service and the betterment of patient care. Although Healthcare at Home's contract with Genzyme formally ended in May '02 (Genzyme setting up their own homecare division) Healthcare at Home continues to look after the homecare needs of the vast majority of Gaucher patients in the UK.
